Who Qualifies for Marine & offshore Fares?

Marine and offshore fares are specialist airfares designed for people travelling in connection with marine, offshore, energy and mining operations. Unlike standard public fares, these fares are generally distributed through travel agents and specialist travel management companies with access to the relevant airline agreements.

They can offer greater flexibility, additional baggage and more favourable conditions, which can make them particularly valuable when travel plans change at short notice. Depending on the airline and journey, they can also offer cost savings compared with standard fares.

Seafarers and vessel crew

Seafarers travelling to join a vessel or returning home are among the most common users of marine fares.

This can include crew working across commercial shipping, cruise, offshore support vessels, ferries and cargo vessels.

Marine and vessel-based personnel

Engineers, contractors, surveyors, superintendents, inspectors and other technical personnel may qualify when travelling to a vessel or marine project to carry out work.

This can include personnel travelling to vessels in service, shipyards, dry docks or new-build projects.

Offshore oil and gas workers

Specialist offshore fares can also be available to personnel travelling to rigs, platforms, drilling vessels and other offshore installations.

This can include personnel supporting engineering, maintenance, technical and other operational activities.

Offshore wind workers

Wind farm technicians, engineers, contractors and other personnel travelling to offshore wind projects may qualify for specialist offshore or marine fares.

Some airlines also offer dedicated fares for contractors, technicians and other personnel travelling to land-based wind farms, offshore installations and new-build projects. These have their own eligibility requirements.

Mining and resources personnel

Some airlines offer dedicated mining fares for personnel travelling in connection with mining projects.

Does working in the industry automatically qualify you?

No.

Working in the oil and gas, marine, mining or renewable energy sector doesn't automatically mean a traveller or journey qualifies for a specialist fare.

Eligibility is generally based on the purpose of the journey, the traveller's role and the conditions of the specific fare.

What documentation might be required?

Airlines can require evidence that a traveller meets the conditions of the fare.

Depending on the airline and journey, this may include:

  • Valid seafarer's book or discharge book

  • Proof of employment

  • Employer or assignment letter

  • Vessel, rig or project details

  • Confirmation of the traveller's role

  • Crew manifest, where applicable

Why specialist travel management matters

Specialist fares aren't generally available through standard public booking channels. At Munro's Travel, we have access to specialist fares through our airline agreements and the expertise to identify the right options for each journey.

For businesses managing regular crew rotations, offshore travel or project mobilisation, we can check eligibility, compare available fares and manage the booking from start to finish. This can help reduce overall travel costs while giving your travellers the flexibility they need when plans change.
